Toronto Chowon Korean Restaurant Review
Hello!
This is Toronto Walker.
Today, I’d like to share my review of "Chowon", a Korean restaurant in Toronto that has been offering a variety of traditional Korean dishes for a long time.
"Chowon" is located in North York, Toronto, and it is one of the few long-standing Korean restaurants in the area, continuing its operations for many years.
- Address: 17 Drewry Ave, North York, ON M2M 1C9
- Phone: (416)-250-7422
- Open Hours: 11:30 AM - 1:00 AM (Monday - Sunday)
I visited in the afternoon, and it was relatively quiet at that time.
The restaurant offers a variety of Korean dishes, and the flavors are generally clean and well-balanced.
In my opinion, the overall taste of the Korean dishes at Chowon is clean and well-balanced. However, my favorite dish at Chowon is definitely "Agujjim (Spicy Braised Monkfish)" (spicy braised monkfish). I’d like to share this dish with you and highly recommend it.
I ordered the "Agujjim (Spicy Braised Monkfish)" as soon as I sat down. For three adults, the portion might be slightly small, so adding a side dish is recommended. But since there were only two of us, the portion was just right for two people.
Doesn't it look delicious?
I personally prefer Chowon’s Agujjim (Spicy Braised Monkfish) over other Korean restaurants' versions because the spice level, seasoning, and freshness of the monkfish and bean sprouts are all perfect for those who love spicy Korean food.
In my opinion, many other Korean restaurants tend to tone down the spice and heat to suit Canadian tastes. However, Chowon's Agujjim (Spicy Braised Monkfish) stays true to the traditional spicy flavor you’d find in Korea, making it incredibly authentic and flavorful.
Especially when eating the bean sprouts and monkfish together, the combination of flavors in my mouth was simply fantastic. The fresh and spicy taste blended perfectly, leaving me wanting more with every bite.
The food disappeared quickly, as the two of us were thoroughly enjoying it. We even ordered an extra bowl of rice and shared it, since one bowl each wasn't quite enough. It was so good that we couldn't stop eating.
Unfortunately, the "mideodeok" (Sea squirt), an essential ingredient in Agujjim (Spicy Braised Monkfish), was missing on the day we visited. It used to be included, so I’m unsure if it was a one-time change due to ingredient availability or a permanent adjustment to the recipe.
Nevertheless, the two of us were completely satisfied with the meal, and the price was quite reasonable. While other Korean dishes are also great, if you're in Toronto and craving Agujjim (Spicy Braised Monkfish), I highly recommend Chowon over other restaurants!
